Mbappé’s Red Card Woes Return
French striker Kylian Mbappé picked up another red card after nearly six years without being sent off. The dismissal came after a reckless studs-up challenge on Antonio Blanco during the LaLiga EA Sports clash between Real Madrid and Alavés. It’s the fourth straight red of his professional career in 503 official matches — and all of them have come without a second yellow.
Five-Year Clean Sheet... Broken
Mbappé’s last sending-off came back on April 27, 2019, in the Coupe de France final between PSG and Stade Rennes. He was shown a straight red in the 119th minute, which meant he couldn’t take his penalty in the shootout. PSG ended up losing the title 8-7 after a 2-2 draw in regular and extra time.
Interestingly, two of Mbappé’s three red cards with PSG came against the same team — Stade Rennes. The first was on January 30, 2018, in the Coupe de la Ligue semifinal, where he was sent off in the 61st minute, though PSG still won that game 3-2. The other was the infamous 2019 cup final. The other red card in Ligue 1 came on September 1, 2018, during an away game against Nîmes. He was sent off in the 90th minute, but PSG still came out on top with a 4-2 win, so it didn’t affect the result too much.
A Blow for Real Madrid’s Upcoming Games
In his debut season with Real Madrid, Mbappé had already picked up four yellow cards — three in LaLiga EA Sports (against Espanyol, Girona, and Real Valladolid) and one in the Champions League (against Atlético de Madrid).
After this red card, he’ll miss at least one match due to "serious foul play," ruling him out of the upcoming clash with Athletic Club. If the suspension ends up being longer than three games, he could also miss the highly anticipated Copa del Rey final against Barcelona on April 26 in Seville.
