Nico Williams Gets Advice From Bilbao After Real Madrid Interest Emerges
Fernando Llorente speaks from experience and urges the Athletic star to follow his heart if he chooses to leave.
Amid growing rumors linking Nico Williams with a move to Real Madrid, a familiar voice from Bilbao has stepped in with heartfelt advice. Former Athletic Club striker Fernando Llorente, now serving as a UEFA ambassador during the Europa League final in San Mamés, took the opportunity to send a clear message to the young winger.
“Let Him Decide With His Heart”
Speaking on Buenas Noches y Buenos Goles on Radio MARCA, Llorente acknowledged the swirling speculation and didn’t deny Nico’s immense potential. “It’s obvious that Nico is a standout player,” he said, before offering a more personal perspective. “My advice is that he decides with his heart. And if he does leave Athletic, let it be on good terms.”
Llorente, who experienced a complicated exit from the club himself, stressed the importance of maintaining respect for the team and its supporters. He also pointed to the Champions League as a potential deciding factor: “If Athletic Club qualifies, that could convince him to stay one more year.”
A Respected Voice in Bilbao
Llorente, who also played for Tottenham, reflected on his time in Bilbao with a mix of pride and frustration. “There were chances to return, but someone within the board didn’t want it to happen,” he said. “Even so, I’m grateful for my career and everything I experienced outside of Bilbao.”
Beyond his comments on Nico Williams, Llorente also paid tribute to fellow Spanish veterans Óscar de Marcos and Pepe Reina, both of whom are set to retire this season. “De Marcos had an incredible career. I’m happy for him—he retires after lifting a cup and leading the Gabarra,” he said. As for Reina, he added: “He’s a showman, a legend. Whatever he does next, he’ll do it well.”
While Real Madrid reportedly considers paying Nico Williams’ €58 million release clause, voices from Bilbao remind him there’s more to football than a big move. With experience and sincerity, Fernando Llorente’s words carry the weight of someone who’s lived it all—and who knows the value of leaving the club with dignity.
