Real Madrid eyeing Álvaro Carreras from Benfica — with help or hindrance from Manchester United
Real Madrid has stepped up its efforts to strengthen the left-back position ahead of next season, and topping the list of targets is Álvaro Carreras, currently playing for Benfica. The club sees him as a priority signing, given Ferland Mendy’s inconsistent form and recurring injuries. At just 22, Carreras has been one of the breakout stars of Portuguese football this season and would be a perfect fit for the five-man defensive system that Xabi Alonso is expected to implement once he takes over in June.
A tricky deal with three parties involved
However, the transfer won't be easy. True to its tough negotiation style, Benfica points to Carreras' release clause, set at €60 million (around $65 million) — a fee Real Madrid is unwilling to pay. As a result, the club is exploring ways to bring that price down without compromising its sporting project.
That’s where Manchester United comes into the picture. Carreras’ former club still holds a €18 million (roughly $19.5 million) buy-back clause, valid until December. Madrid’s plan would be for the Red Devils to activate that clause, and then sell him on to Los Blancos for an estimated €30–35 million. This way, both United and Real Madrid could avoid dealing directly with Benfica, and all parties would come out ahead.
Carreras: a long-term investment with Madrid roots
While Valdebebas would prefer to negotiate directly with the Portuguese side, the so-called “bridge operation” involving United is seen as the most realistic path forward. The only risk is that the English club decides to keep Carreras or asks for a higher resale price. However, it's believed the player isn’t keen on returning to the Premier League, which could help pave the way to the Bernabéu.
A product of the Deportivo La Coruña and Real Madrid youth academies, Álvaro Carreras is already well known to the club’s scouting department. His tactical maturity, speed, and attacking flair make him a solid option to reinforce the left flank. His strong performances in the Champions League with Benfica only enhance his profile as a high-impact signing for a team looking to dominate both in Spain and Europe under Xabi Alonso’s leadership.
