Real Madrid Furious Over Incident Involving Kylian Mbappé: "Global Scandal"
It was the weekend's most controversial incident, and the White Club did not hesitate to call it a "global scandal" and an "incomprehensible decision."
Real Madrid has labeled the yellow-card sanction given to Carlos Romero for his challenge on Kylian Mbappé as a "global scandal" in the headline news on its official website. In a video published on the club's TV channel, Madrid called the decision "incomprehensible" and accused LaLiga of being "tainted by the heirs of Negreira."
The controversy from the latest LaLiga EA Sports matchday, where Real Madrid suffered a defeat against Espanyol on Saturday night, remains the central topic in the club’s media outlets.
The challenge on Mbappé, which occurred around the 60th minute, was made by the same player who later scored the winning goal in the dying moments of the match. Madrid’s outrage has also been fueled by two penalty appeals and a disallowed goal for Vinícius, which the club claims contributed to its "indignation."
"Global scandal," read the front page of the club’s website, accompanied by a large image of Romero’s tackle from behind on Mbappé. "An incomprehensible, inexplicable decision—a global scandal. This is a league tainted by the heirs of Negreira, which tarnishes Spanish football and the global image of Spain," stated the voiceover in the video, which also highlighted coverage from international media.
"The scandal is so huge that media outlets in Spain and across the world unanimously describe it as a scandal," the video continued.
The match report published late Saturday night also pointed to refereeing decisions, with the headline: "Defeat in Barcelona amid referee and VAR controversy."
In his post-match press conference, Carlo Ancelotti was the only Real Madrid representative to speak publicly about the incident. He expressed his shock at referee Alejandro Muñiz Ruiz’s decision and the role of VAR official Iglesias Villanueva.
"This foul—it's inexplicable, the decision made by both the referee and VAR. Everyone saw it. The most important thing is to protect the player, and this was a very ugly tackle with a serious risk of injury. VAR exists for this reason. We find it incomprehensible that it wasn’t a red card," Ancelotti stated.
