Real Madrid Wins and Closes In on Barça
Real Madrid overcame injuries and the so-called "FIFA virus" with a resounding 3-0 victory against Leganés at the Butarque Stadium. This result boosts the team's morale ahead of their crucial visit to Anfield to face Liverpool.
Carlo Ancelotti fielded a defense that, while expected based on pre-match predictions, seemed unlikely at the start of the season. Fede Valverde stepped in as right-back due to injuries to Dani Carvajal and Lucas Vázquez, while Raúl Asencio partnered with Antonio Rüdiger in the center-back position following Éder Militao's long-term absence.
The surprises came in midfield and attack, not only with the inclusion of less frequently used players like Dani Ceballos and Arda Güler but also with the decision to deploy Kylian Mbappé on the left wing, shifting Vinícius Jr. to the center of the attack.
This adjustment unlocked Mbappé’s full potential, as he dominated the left flank from the outset. Ten minutes in, he scored a goal after a well-placed pass from Vinícius, but it was ruled out for offside—a recurring issue for the Madrid striker, who leads LaLiga in offside calls.
At the other end, Leganés had a similar moment when Munir El Haddadi, part of the attack alongside Miguel de la Fuente, saw his shot hit the crossbar only to be disallowed.
With limited threats from Leganés to trouble Thibaut Courtois, Madrid capitalized on their opponent’s mistakes. One error by Yvan Neyou led to a play by Vinícius inside the box that was deflected by Sergio González. Minutes later, Vinícius delivered a perfect assist for Mbappé to break the deadlock just before halftime.
The second half continued in Madrid's favor. Arda Güler stood out as the creative engine in midfield, dazzling with skillful dribbles and dangerous shots—one of which was saved by goalkeeper Marko Dmitrovic.
The second goal came in the 65th minute from a free kick. Dani Ceballos set the ball, Güler positioned it, and Valverde fired a low, powerful shot into the near post—reminiscent of a similar goal against Valladolid a few months ago.
The final 3-0 came in the 85th minute when Jude Bellingham headed home a rebound off the crossbar, following a deflected shot by Brahim Díaz. It was the perfect cap to a solid performance by Los Blancos.
