Ter Stegen could follow in the footsteps of Ansu Fati and Paul Pogba with a move to AS Monaco
The future of Marc-André ter Stegen at FC Barcelona is becoming increasingly uncertain. With the arrival of young goalkeeper Joan García from Espanyol for $29 million and the ongoing contract extension for Wojciech Szczesny, the German shot-stopper appears to be falling down the pecking order in Hansi Flick’s new project. In this context, AS Monaco has shown interest in signing the veteran keeper, having already secured deals for Ansu Fati and Paul Pogba.
According to L’Équipe and Mundo Deportivo, the Principality club has already initiated contact with Ter Stegen’s camp to assess his availability. While the keeper has publicly stated his desire to remain at Barça, the Monaco offer is tempting: guaranteed starting role, Champions League football, and a lower-profile environment — ideal for regaining form ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
Monaco eyeing experience between the posts
AS Monaco’s search for an experienced goalkeeper isn’t new. After a season marked by inconsistency with Philipp Köhn and Radosław Majecki, the club has explored several names like André Onana, Vanja Milinkovic-Savic, and Uğurcan Çakır. However, Ter Stegen’s profile — international pedigree, leadership, and excellent footwork — fits perfectly with head coach Adi Hütter’s vision.
Talks between the clubs reportedly began alongside negotiations for Ansu Fati’s loan move. Due to Ter Stegen’s deferred salary, a loan with an option to buy is on the table. This would allow Barcelona to ease their wage bill while keeping the door open for a possible return, and give Monaco a top-tier reinforcement without a massive upfront cost.
While no official offer has been made yet, the situation could evolve quickly in the coming weeks. The arrival of Joan García has raised competition in Barça’s goalkeeping department, and the chance to be a starter in a competitive team could prompt Ter Stegen to reconsider his future. If the transfer goes through, he’d be the second Barça player to join the French club’s ambitious project, which is shaping up to make headlines this season.
