Andreas Christensen Suffers Another Setback With Barcelona

  • Just as Andreas Christensen was finally beginning to put one of the most difficult periods of his career behind him, another injury has stopped him in his tracks.

Barcelona confirmed on Sunday that the Danish defender has suffered a muscle injury to the rectus femoris in his left quadriceps, a problem that occurred during the 3-1 victory over Sevilla in LaLiga.

The club did not establish an exact recovery timeline. Its medical statement only indicated that he will be sidelined for the next few weeks and that his return will depend on how the injury progresses.

The injury represents another blow for Hansi Flick, but especially for a Christensen who was beginning to regain something that has been extremely difficult for him to find over the past two years: consistency.

Two Seasons Marked by Injuries

Physical problems have constantly followed the defender since 2024.

After making 42 appearances during the 2023-24 season, Christensen virtually disappeared from Barcelona’s plans during the following campaign.

Tendinitis in his left Achilles kept him sidelined for 146 days. He returned to availability in January 2025, but shortly afterward suffered an injury to his right calf that once again halted his recovery.

When he was finally medically cleared, another problem emerged. In March, he suffered an injury to his right soleus that extended his absence even further.

The result was an almost entirely lost season. Between his appearance against Valencia in August 2024 and his return against Inter in the Champions League semifinals, 256 days passed without him playing a match for the Catalan club.

And just when it appeared that difficult period was behind him, another even more serious setback arrived.

In December 2025, Christensen suffered a partial tear of the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during a training session. Barcelona opted for conservative treatment, and the Dane did not play again until May 2026, 158 days after his previous appearance.

Christensen Was Regaining His Place Under Hansi Flick

That is why the injury against Sevilla arrives at an especially frustrating moment.

Christensen had started the 2026-27 season by appearing in six matches for Barcelona, starting four of them and accumulating 402 minutes and one assist.

After spending so many months in and out of the treatment room, the center back was once again playing regularly and regaining an important role in Flick’s rotation.

His performances when available have rarely been the problem. Since joining from Chelsea in 2022, the Dane has shown that he can play at center back and even in midfield, but his physical problems have prevented him from maintaining that presence for extended periods.

The club itself backed his future this summer by extending his contract through 2028.

Another Problem for Barcelona’s Defense

His absence also reduces Flick’s options in an important position.

Without Christensen, the coach has Pau Cubarsí, Eric García and Gerard Martín as natural options in central defense, while Jules Koundé can also play in that position if necessary.

For now, Barcelona has not specified the exact severity of the injury or established a date for his return.

Christensen will have to begin another recovery process.

For a player who has spent far too much time over the past two years trying to get back onto the pitch, the real challenge is no longer simply recovering from another injury. It is making sure that when he returns, this time he can stay there.
