Frenkie de Jong’s situation is beginning to become a problem for FC Barcelona. The Dutch midfielder is injured, has lost influence within the dressing room and now appears to have developed a significant distance from part of the fanbase as well.
Frenkie de Jong Faces His Most Difficult Moment at Barcelona
The latest episode came during the Joan Gamper Trophy.
On a night designed to introduce the new Barcelona squad to its supporters at Spotify Camp Nou, practically the entire team received a warm welcome from the stands. Rodri, the club’s marquee summer signing, was among those who received the loudest ovations.
With De Jong, however, it was a very different story.
When he walked out in front of the supporters, there were whistles and a noticeably cold reception, an image that reflected the difficult moment being experienced by a player who has been one of the team’s most important pieces for years.
According to SPORT, several episodes behind the scenes have gradually strained his relationship with the Barça environment.
An Injury That Frustrated Barcelona
Much of the problem began during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
De Jong suffered physical problems while playing for the Netherlands, but decided to continue competing. Once his national team was eliminated, he did not immediately return to Barcelona, and subsequent medical tests revealed that the injury was more serious than initially expected.
That is when the frustration began.
The situation became even more complicated because of the decision regarding his recovery. According to SPORT, the midfielder opted for conservative treatment instead of undergoing surgery, a choice that reportedly did not convince everyone at the club.
The risk is clear: if the treatment does not produce the expected results and surgery ultimately becomes necessary, the Dutchman could miss a significant portion of the season.
For a Barcelona side beginning a new campaign with major objectives, being without one of its most important midfielders for such a long period was not part of the plan.
De Jong Also Loses the Captaincy
Tensions increased when Frenkie de Jong decided to publicly respond to reports surrounding his situation.
The Dutchman defended his position and criticized stories that, in his view, were damaging his image. However, his comments did little to put an end to the controversy.
Another significant development followed shortly afterward: De Jong was left out of the team’s captaincy group.
Hansi Flick publicly explained that the injury played a role in the decision, although SPORT reports that the relationship between the coach and the midfielder is currently going through a delicate period.
Taken together, everything has created a scenario that would have been difficult to imagine only a few months ago.

Could De Jong Leave Barcelona?
His future is now the big question.
De Jong renewed his contract last season, and an immediate departure would be complicated, especially while he remains injured. But that does not mean the situation is completely closed.
According to SPORT, some voices within the Barça environment are beginning to believe that a sale could become an alternative if the situation does not improve.
The winter transfer window could become an important point on the calendar.
By then, Barcelona should have a much clearer idea about the midfielder’s recovery, his role in Flick’s project and, most importantly, whether the relationship between all parties can return to normal.
It will also be important to see what happens inside the dressing room and how the team’s captaincy structure is ultimately defined.
De Jong has experienced practically everything since arriving at FC Barcelona. He has been an undisputed starter, dealt with transfer rumors and injuries, and gone through periods when his future appeared to be away from the club.
But this time, the problem is different.
It is not only about soccer.
The injury, the decisions made during his recovery, losing the captaincy and now the whistles from Spotify Camp Nou have placed Frenkie de Jong in one of the most difficult moments of his career as a Barcelona player.
And there is another factor that could make his situation even more complicated: the arrival of Rodri.
The Spain captain joined FC Barcelona to become a key piece of the new project and is expected to be a starter in Hansi Flick’s midfield. With De Jong injured and Rodri already gaining ground at the beginning of the season, the Dutchman could find himself facing even greater competition when he is finally ready to return.
