James Rodríguez Says Goodbye to MLS To Focus on the 2026 World Cup
The Colombian star will end his spell with Minnesota United and become a free agent in order to fully focus on Colombia’s preparation for the 2026 World Cup.
James Rodríguez’s adventure in Major League Soccer is set to end sooner than expected. According to Michele Giannone, an MLS reporter for Apple TV, the Colombian midfielder will leave Minnesota United next week and become a free agent starting in June.
The move brings an end to James’ short stint in American soccer as he shifts his full attention toward preparing with the Colombian national team for the 2026 World Cup, a tournament that could mark the final major international chapter of his career.
James joined Minnesota United in February 2026 on a short-term contract that included an option to extend his stay through the end of the season. However, the club reportedly decided not to activate the extension clause due to his inconsistent availability and recurring physical problems during his time in MLS.
Although he showed flashes of his trademark quality in several matches, the former Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Everton playmaker was unable to establish himself as a guaranteed starter. Injuries and fitness concerns limited his overall impact with the American side.
Reports indicate that James’ final appearance for Minnesota United will come this Wednesday against the Colorado Rapids, officially marking the end of his MLS journey.
The Colombian’s main objective now is to arrive at the 2026 World Cup in top physical and competitive condition. James remains one of the key leaders of Néstor Lorenzo’s Colombia squad and still hopes to shine on football’s biggest stage once again.
His departure also raises questions about his next destination, as the experienced midfielder will once again be free to negotiate with clubs around the world ahead of next season.
