A Defining Choice for His International Future

In an in-depth interview with CBS’s 60 Minutes, Lamine Yamal reflected on his rapid rise, his life off the pitch, and one of the most important decisions he has faced despite his age: choosing between Spain and Morocco. 

Born in Spain to a family with Moroccan roots, the FC Barcelona winger admitted that representing Morocco was a real possibility—especially after their historic World Cup semifinal run. Yet when the moment came, he insists he never truly hesitated. His footballing destiny, he says, was tied to Spain.

Yamal explained that Morocco’s success naturally made him consider the option. But the final decision rested on something deeper: identity, upbringing and long-held dreams. “I always wanted to play a European Championship,” he said—something he knew he could only achieve with Spain. That ambition, combined with the environment in which he grew up, ultimately shaped his choice.

Spain as Home, Project and Emotional Anchor

While he speaks warmly about Morocco—calling it “also my country”—Yamal emphasized that Spain represents where he grew up, where he trained and where his life took shape. For him, choosing Spain was not merely a sporting decision but a continuation of his personal story.
“Spain was playing the Euros, I grew up here, and I feel this is my country,” he told 60 Minutes, summarizing the sentiment that guided him.

His debut at the European Championship only reinforced that bond. At just 16, he approached the tournament with remarkable calm, treating it almost like any other youth competition. He described listening to music on the bus, checking social media, falling asleep before games, and simply enjoying each moment. That natural ease, he believes, allowed him to perform without overthinking the pressure or the stage.

A World Cup Arriving at the Perfect Time

Yamal made it clear during the interview that he feels ready to lead Spain into the 2026 World Cup. He believes La Roja arrives as a true contender, and he senses a nation ready to believe again. Personally, he feels important, confident and fully prepared for what lies ahead.
