Raúl Asencio Convicted of Drunk Driving: The Penalty the Real Madrid Defender Must Serve
Raúl Asencio was convicted in Gran Canaria for driving under the influence of alcohol. The Real Madrid defender must pay €14,400 (approx. $16,690) and will be banned from driving for eight months.
Real Madrid defender Raúl Asencio was sanctioned by Spanish authorities after a roadside check in Gran Canaria detected an alcohol level above the legal limit for driving.
According to information from ESPN and details attributed to judicial sources, the footballer underwent two breathalyzer tests during a traffic operation in the early hours of August 16.
The incident occurred after Asencio was stopped while driving a Porsche Macan on the GC-1 highway, in the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana. No crash or other road incident was reported in connection with the case.
The Alcohol Level Detected and Why the Case Went to Court
The first test administered to Raúl Asencio recorded 0.90 mg/l, while the second registered 0.88 mg/l. The general legal limit in Spain is 0.25 mg/l, meaning the footballer's readings were considerably above the permitted level.
In Spain, a reading above 0.60 mg/l can constitute a criminal offense against road safety. As a result, the case went beyond an administrative violation and entered the judicial system.
The Real Madrid defender appeared before the San Bartolomé de Tirajana court a few days later as part of an expedited proceeding. During the hearing, Asencio admitted the facts, allowing the case to be resolved through a judgment.
Court Imposes Fine and Eight-Month Driving Ban
The sentence imposed a €14,400 fine (approximately $16,690), calculated at a rate of €120 per day for four months. The financial penalty was accompanied by the withdrawal of his driving license for eight months.
The conviction was confirmed by a spokesperson for the Superior Court of Justice of the Canary Islands, according to information published by ESPN. The ruling therefore establishes specific penalties that the footballer will have to serve.
Real Madrid was aware of the incident and, according to the sources cited, the club would review the matter under its internal disciplinary code. At the time covered by the information provided, the club had not issued a public statement regarding any potential action.
Raúl Asencio Recovers From Injury While Facing the Consequences of the Case
The timing of the incident is also relevant to the player's current situation. Raúl Asencio is recovering from an injury after suffering a muscular problem in the rectus femoris of his right leg on July 30.
Real Madrid's official medical report said his recovery would depend on his progress, while sources cited in the reports indicated that he could return to the team in mid-September. For now, his physical condition and the legal proceedings stemming from the incident are separate matters, although both form part of the circumstances surrounding the defender.
