Steven Gerrard Takes Aim at Trent Alexander-Arnold Over His Move to Real Madrid
The fallout from Trent Alexander-Arnold’s decision to leave Liverpool for Real Madrid continues to spark debate in England. This time, it was Steven Gerrard, a true Anfield legend, who weighed in — mixing empathy with criticism toward the right-back’s high-profile transfer to Spain.
What Did Gerrard Say About Alexander-Arnold’s Move to Real Madrid?
Speaking on a podcast alongside Rio Ferdinand, Gerrard admitted he understands the allure of joining Real Madrid — but made it clear that he would never have made the same choice.
“Any player is going to listen if Barcelona or Real Madrid come calling. Madrid came for me when Mourinho was there, seriously. And I listened. They had my attention. It’s Real Madrid — if those clubs call you, you think about it. If you don’t, you’re not human,” Gerrard said.
However, the former Liverpool captain also expressed strong emotional disagreement with Trent’s decision:
“If I put on the Liverpool shirt, I think: what are you doing? You’re at one of the best teams in Europe, winning things I still dream of winning. You’re one of the club’s key players, adored by the fans. What are you doing?”
“He’s Taken a Huge Risk”
Gerrard praised Alexander-Arnold’s talent but called his departure a gamble for a player who had everything at Liverpool.
“He’s an unbelievable footballer — one of the best passers I’ve ever seen. He’s in the same conversation as Beckham and Scholes, no doubt. But as a Liverpool leader, with a new contract on the table… he’s taken a big risk. I hope it works out for him.”
The Al-Ettifaq manager also addressed the criticism Trent has faced since his move to Spain, acknowledging that scrutiny is part of modern football — as long as it stays within limits.
“You’ll always get criticism — you’ve got to live with that. What needs to stop is the abuse and harassment. But constructive criticism from people who pay their money to go to games or buy your shirt — that’s fair.”

A Divisive Exit at Anfield
Alexander-Arnold’s move to Real Madrid, where he reunited with close friend Jude Bellingham, has divided Liverpool fans. Some see it as a natural step in his career, while others — including Gerrard — view it as a betrayal of the club’s identity.
When asked directly if he would have done the same during his playing days, Gerrard didn’t hesitate:
“I wouldn’t have done it.”
With that statement, Steven Gerrard captured the mood of many Liverpool supporters — a mix of understanding for Trent’s ambition, but heartbreak at seeing one of their own join their greatest European rival.
