The Drought Is Over! Julián Álvarez Returns To Scoring Ways After 100+ Days
The "Spider" bites again: after more than 100 days without scoring in Spain, Julián Álvarez delivered a historic first-half performance at the Metropolitano to condemn Barcelona to a humiliating 4-0 defeat.
Some nights are meant for settling scores, and this Thursday at the Metropolitano was a total redemption for Julián Álvarez. In just 45 minutes of pure red-and-white frenzy, the Argentine ended a domestic drought that had haunted him since November, leading a whirlwind that left Hansi Flick's Barça completely helpless.
It had been over three months since Julián last celebrated a goal in Spanish competitions (his last European strike coming against PSV in December). However, backed by an ultra-offensive gamble from Simeone—who started Griezmann, Giuliano, and the winter sensation Ademola Lookman—the "19" finally shed the weight of pressure against the very rival that, ironically, is rumored to be his next destination.
Architect and Executioner
The siege began early. Although the 1-0 arrived following a glaring error by goalkeeper Joan García in the 6th minute, it was Julián’s suffocating pressure that forced the Catalan disaster. Far from being satisfied, the Argentine showcased his most creative side: he initiated the play for the second goal scored by Griezmann and, with a "cool-headedness" rare for someone desperate to score, he gifted the 3-0 to Lookman in the 34th minute when shooting himself would have been the easier option.
The End of the Streak
The apotheosis arrived just before halftime. After being denied twice by a providential Jules Koundé, Julián found his reward. He received the ball at the edge of the area from Lookman, looked up with the composure of the elite, and placed the ball where Joan García couldn't reach it.
4-0. A shocking result in a Cup semi-final that not only leaves the tie virtually decided but also brings back the smile to a Julián Álvarez who has taken flight just when his team needed him most.
