The Reason Why Rodri Rejected Real Madrid to Sign for Barcelona
The Spanish midfielder had long dreamed of playing for Los Blancos, but when the opportunity finally arrived, something had changed.
Rodri Dreamed of Real Madrid but Chose Barcelona
Rodri Hernández is set to wear the Barcelona shirt despite spending much of his career with a very different ambition. The Spanish midfielder had long considered playing for Real Madrid one of his dreams, but when a genuine opportunity finally emerged, he decided to turn it down and join their biggest rivals instead.
His decision was not driven by money. Real Madrid and Barcelona reportedly offered similar financial terms, leaving other factors to determine his future: how strongly each club pursued him, how he fit into their footballing plans and the level of certainty each project could offer at this stage of his career.
To understand why one of Rodri's long-standing ambitions ultimately went in a completely different direction, it is necessary to go back several years. Real Madrid had already appeared as a possible destination before his move to Manchester, but the opportunity never materialized.
Real Madrid's First Opportunity Came in 2019
Back in 2019, Rodri was still an Atlético Madrid player when Pep Guardiola and Manchester City identified him as a major target.
The midfielder reportedly waited until late in the transfer window hoping Real Madrid might make a move. However, with Toni Kroos, Luka Modric and Casemiro firmly established in midfield, signing Rodri was never a genuine priority for Los Blancos.
He eventually moved to England, a decision that transformed his career. Under Guardiola, Rodri developed into one of the world's leading midfielders and became a fundamental piece of Manchester City's success.

Real Madrid's Doubts Did Not Go Unnoticed
The circumstances were very different this summer. Rodri was entering the final year of his Manchester City contract, while Guardiola's departure significantly changed the landscape surrounding his future.
His outstanding performances at the 2026 FIFA World Cup also increased Real Madrid's interest. Rodri completed more passes than any player had previously managed in a single edition of the tournament, doing so with an accuracy rate above 93%.
Despite those numbers, there were reportedly doubts inside Real Madrid over whether Rodri was exactly the profile the club wanted. One assessment attributed to figures within the club was that he “slows the ball down too much,” with Madrid instead looking for a more dynamic and physically powerful midfielder.
Florentino Pérez and José Ángel Sánchez eventually contacted Rodri, but the midfielder reportedly sensed that Real Madrid's interest lacked the absolute conviction he expected.
Barcelona Went All-In to Convince Rodri
Barcelona approached the situation very differently. The Catalan club made the Spain international a priority and several important figures became directly involved in convincing him to make the move.
Deco, Joan Laporta and Hansi Flick reportedly contacted Rodri, while members of the squad also made their desire to see him at Barcelona clear.
That contrast became significant. While Madrid weighed the move amid questions about Rodri's age and playing style, Barcelona presented him as a central piece of a system perfectly suited to his qualities.
The Sporting Project Ultimately Made the Difference
Another major factor was the stability Rodri saw in the two projects. At 30, the midfielder wanted clarity about his role and the direction of the team he would join for the next stage of his career.
Barcelona offered an established foundation, clearly defined roles within the squad and a footballing philosophy similar to that of the Spain team with which Rodri had just won the World Cup.
Real Madrid, meanwhile, represented greater uncertainty from the midfielder's perspective. With no significant financial difference between the two offers, the sporting project became even more decisive.

Rodri Called Real Madrid Before Making His Final Move
Once his mind was made up, Rodri wanted Real Madrid to hear the decision directly from him. He reportedly contacted José Ángel Sánchez to thank the club for its interest and respectful approach before definitively closing the door on a move to the Santiago Bernabéu.
From there, Rodri waited for Barcelona and Manchester City to reach an agreement, which eventually happened after the Catalan club improved its offer several times.
For Madrid supporters, the outcome is particularly painful because the call Rodri had once waited years to receive eventually came. By then, however, it did not carry the conviction he had once imagined. Barcelona showed him exactly that, and it ultimately helped the Catalan giants secure one of the biggest signings of the summer.
