Gonzalo Montiel Reportedly Set to Return to River Plate
Club Atlético River Plate is making big moves in the transfer market, and one of the most exciting developments is the imminent return of Gonzalo Montiel. "Cachete," as he’s affectionately known, is set to don the Millonario jersey once again after a successful stint in Europe, which included winning the 2022 Qatar World Cup with Argentina and the 2023 Europa League with Sevilla FC.
Transfer Details and Contract
The deal with the Spanish club has been finalized for $4.5 million, with an additional $500,000 in performance-based bonuses. Montiel will sign a contract with River Plate that runs through December 2028 and will join preseason training in Argentina after completing his medical exams. Sevilla, struggling with Financial Fair Play constraints, played hardball during negotiations, but Montiel’s desire to return to Núñez proved decisive.
Montiel made his professional debut with River in 2016 and was part of a golden era under coach Marcelo Gallardo. During his first spell, he played 140 matches, scored six goals, provided 14 assists, and won eight titles, including the historic 2018 Copa Libertadores victory over Boca Juniors at the Santiago Bernabéu. Now 28, Montiel returns with an impressive résumé and the goal of bringing leadership and experience to the squad.
A Squad Stacked with World Champions
Montiel’s return bolsters a squad that already features fellow World Cup winners Franco Armani, Germán Pezzella, and Marcos Acuña. Under the guidance of coach Martín Demichelis, River Plate is aiming to conquer the Copa Libertadores and the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, reaffirming their status as a powerhouse in South American and global football.
A Commitment to River Plate DNA
Montiel’s comeback is part of the club’s strategy to bring back players who have had successful stints with River. Recent signings like Lucas Martínez Quarta and Enzo Pérez reflect the Millonarios' ambition to reclaim continental and global glory. Montiel’s return is a source of pride for fans, who are eager to see him back in the red sash at the Monumental.
