Monaco Clinch Champions League Spot as Lyon’s Hopes Fade
Monaco secured their place in next season’s UEFA Champions League with a 2-0 win over Lyon at the Stade Louis II, leaving the visitors’ European hopes hanging by a thread with just one matchday remaining in the Ligue 1 season.
Adi Hütter’s side extended their unbeaten run to five matches—with three wins and two draws—and took advantage of the recent slips by other top-four contenders such as Nice, Lille, and Strasbourg to create an unreachable gap in the standings.
Currently third in the table, Monaco sealed the win in just six minutes. In the 62nd minute, Takumi Minamino opened the scoring, followed by a second goal from Denis Zakaria in the 68th, locking in all three points for the home side.
Lyon, on the other hand, are in danger of missing out on European competition. The loss marks their third defeat in the last four matches, and they now sit three points behind Strasbourg and Lille, who are ahead of them in the standings. They will close their season hosting Angers, a side with nothing left to play for.
