OFFICIAL: PSG Snags Portuguese Gem from Benfica
PSG has officially signed the talented Portuguese midfielder, João Neves. At just 19, Neves has committed to the Parisian club until 2029, in a move that promises to further strengthen Luis Enrique's squad.
João Neves started his football journey in 2012 in his hometown of Tavira. In 2016, he joined Benfica's youth academy and went through all the ranks. In December 2020, he signed his first professional contract and in 2022, he was part of the team that won the UEFA Youth League. He made his debut with the first team on December 30, 2022, in a league match against Braga.
Under coach Roger Schmidt, Neves not only helped clinch the Portuguese championship title in 2023, but he also made his first appearance in the Champions League in February of the same year, at just 18 years old. Upon his arrival in Paris, the young midfielder said, "It’s a huge honor for me to join Paris Saint-Germain, such an ambitious club. I'll give my all to help my teammates, grow in this fantastic club, and win many titles."
PSG president and CEO Nasser Al-Khelaïfi also shared his excitement: "We are thrilled to welcome João Neves to the PSG family. João is one of the most talented players from Portugal and the world. He joins PSG with great passion and is determined to fight for our jersey, which is what we expect from all our players. We continue to build a young and talented team based on teamwork and a collective spirit, the foundations of our club's bright future."
PSG has once again shown its ability to attract the most promising young talents in world football. João Neves arrives in the French capital following his standout performance with Portugal in EURO 2024.
With his arrival at PSG, Neves joins a star-studded team and promises to be a key player in the club's long-term project. With so many young stars like Kolo Muani, Bradley Barcola, Lucas Beraldo, and more, the Ligue 1 champions are bolstering their strategy for both the short and long term.
