A Milestone Nearly 35 Years in the Making

Nearly 35 years have passed since George Weah took French football by storm with AS Monaco. Now, another African striker has achieved something no player from the continent had managed since that remarkable campaign. Lassine Sinayoko has become the first African footballer to score at least eight goals in the opening nine matches of a Ligue 1 season since the Liberian legend in 1991-92.

The Mali international reached the milestone after scoring twice in Paris FC's 3-1 victory over AS Monaco on Sunday, November 1. He also provided an assist for Pablo Pagis, meaning he was directly involved in all three goals as his team secured another impressive result. The performance also took him to the top of the Ligue 1 scoring charts.

The historical comparison becomes even more remarkable when considering that Weah had scored ten goals after nine matches that season. Sinayoko has not matched that total, but his eight goals have ended a wait of more than three decades for another African player to reach the same threshold.

From George Weah to Lassine Sinayoko

During the 1991-92 season, George Weah was already one of AS Monaco's most influential players, building the reputation that would eventually make him one of Africa's greatest footballers. He finished that league campaign with 18 goals, having scored ten in the opening nine rounds.

His career later took him to Paris Saint-Germain and AC Milan, where he achieved his greatest individual recognition. In 1995, Weah won the Ballon d'Or, becoming the first African footballer to receive the prestigious award.

The comparison with Sinayoko is based on a specific statistical achievement, rather than suggesting that the two players have followed identical career paths. While Weah was already an established star in Monaco during the early 1990s, the Paris FC forward is currently enjoying the most productive period of his career in France's top division.

What makes the accomplishment stand out is the length of time involved. Despite the many outstanding African forwards who have played in Ligue 1 since Weah's era, none had reached eight goals within the first nine league matches of a season until Sinayoko.

Eight Goals and Five Assists in Nine Games

The 26-year-old striker's numbers help explain why he has emerged as one of Ligue 1's biggest stories. Through nine matches of the 2026-27 season, Sinayoko has recorded eight goals and five assists, giving him 13 direct goal contributions for Paris FC.

His impressive run includes a hat trick against Olympique de Marseille, two goals and two assists against Stade Rennais, and his latest standout performance against Monaco. Across the matches against Rennes and Monaco, he was directly involved in seven of Paris FC's eight goals.

But Sinayoko's influence extends beyond finishing chances. His physical presence, ability to hold up the ball and willingness to bring teammates into play have given Liam Rosenior's side several ways to attack opposing defenses.

That impact has also helped transform Paris FC's position in the standings. Following the victory over Monaco, the club climbed to fourth place, just three points behind league leader PSG. It is an impressive position for a team that entered the campaign with far more modest expectations.

A Reunion With His Former Club Awaits

Sinayoko's next challenge will carry special significance. On Saturday, November 7, Paris FC will visit AJ Auxerre, the club where the Mali international established himself before making the move to the French capital in the summer of 2026.

He finished last season with 12 Ligue 1 goals, meaning he is already just four away from matching that total after only nine matches. Maintaining his current scoring rate would put him on course to comfortably surpass his previous personal best.

There is still a long way to go in the campaign, and predicting how many goals he might eventually score would be premature. But Sinayoko has already secured a place in the competition's history alongside one of African football's most celebrated names.

George Weah produced an extraordinary start in 1991-92 that remained a benchmark for more than three decades. Now, Lassine Sinayoko has given Ligue 1 a reason to revisit that remarkable chapter.
