Who Is Monaco Manager, Filipe Luis?
The Brazilian Filipe Luís, historic full-back of Atlético de Madrid and Chelsea, took over as coach of AS Monaco in July 2026, in his first European experience after being crowned champion with Flamengo in South America.
AS Monaco surprised the football world in July 2026 by announcing Filipe Luís Kasmirski as their new coach. The Brazilian, remembered for his extensive career as a left-back in Europe, took on the challenge of leading the Principality club with a contract that extends until June 2028. This is his first experience as a coach on the Old Continent, following a successful stint in South American football.
From Flamengo to Ligue 1
Before arriving in France, Filipe Luís left an indelible mark on Flamengo. Between 2024 and 2026, he led the Carioca giant to a series of titles that positioned him as one of the most promising coaches of his generation. Under his leadership, Mengão won the Copa do Brasil in 2024, the Copa Libertadores in 2025, and the Campeonato Brasileiro that same year. These achievements earned him the title of South American Coach of the Year in 2025, a recognition that ultimately catapulted him onto the European radar.
An elite career as a player
His career as a footballer speaks for itself as well. In the left-back position, Filipe Luís played over 300 matches with Atlético de Madrid under the management of Diego Simeone, where he won the Spanish League in 2014 and the Europa League twice, in 2012 and 2018. Additionally, he had a stint at Chelsea, where he became Premier League champion in 2015.
With the Brazil jersey, he accumulated 44 international matches, being part of the squads that won the 2019 Copa América and the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup. His sober, intelligent, and tactically disciplined style made him a reference for the national team and a respected player in Europe.
The challenge in Monaco
Today, at 41 years old, Filipe Luís faces a different stage, transferring his experience as an elite footballer and his success in South America to the competitive arena of Ligue 1. His arrival at Monaco generates expectations both in France and Brazil, where the evolution of a coach who has already proven his ability to transform teams into champions is closely followed.
