Inter Miami Announce Mascherano as New Coach
Inter Miami of MLS announced this Tuesday that Argentine Javier Mascherano will be their new head coach, just one week after the departure of his compatriot Gerardo Martino. Mascherano, who has been coaching the Argentina U-20 national team, signed a three-year contract with the MLS club, until 2027, according to an official club statement.
The former Barcelona player will take charge of a team that includes several of his former teammates from the Catalan club. In Miami, Mascherano will manage Lionel Messi, Luis Suárez, Jordi Alba, and Sergio Busquets, with whom he won two UEFA Champions League titles and five La Liga trophies, along with other important titles.
In addition to these prominent figures, Mascherano will also have several young talents at his disposal, players he has previously coached in Argentina's youth teams, including Tomás Avilés, Facundo Farías, Federico Redondo, and Benjamin Cremaschi.
Mascherano replaces Gerardo Martino, who announced his departure last week for "strictly personal reasons." Despite a remarkable regular season with a points record in MLS, Inter Miami was unexpectedly eliminated in the first round of the playoffs.
In his statement, Mascherano expressed his excitement about the new role: "Coaching a club like Inter Miami is an honor for me, it is a privilege that I will try to make the most of," he said, highlighting his attraction to "the ambition of the organization."
