Inter Miami’s New Stadium for Lionel Messi Comes with a Hefty Price Tag
Lionel Messi's new "home" at Inter Miami will cost over $300 million, and fans will need to wait a bit longer to see the Argentine play there.
The remarkable sporting momentum of Inter Miami directly mirrors its success as both a project and business venture. Alongside three finals and two trophies, which could increase to three soon, the club now counts down to the unveiling of the crown jewel of their project: a majestic new stadium set to redefine the city, with an investment of $350 million.
From the outset, David Beckham and the Mas brothers focused on two key elements essential for the club’s rapid and successful growth. First was the appeal to attract world-class players, achieved with the signings of Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets, Jordi Alba, and Luis Suárez. The second element was the stadium, a major challenge as Miami’s limited land options complicated efforts to secure the ideal site. After overcoming significant hurdles, Inter Miami finally secured a location.
If Messi's arrival forever transformed the club's trajectory, the new stadium could be an even larger milestone, providing a stable home base and attracting prominent sponsors like Royal Caribbean, Chase, and VISA. The forthcoming 'Freedom Park,' encompassing the stadium and its surrounding complex, is set to reshape Miami. Located less than a kilometer from Miami International Airport, this site will impact the county and metropolitan area profoundly. "It will be the first and last thing people see when arriving or leaving Miami,” said Xavier Asensi, COO of Inter Miami, in an interview with EFE.
Thirty-Year Lease and a Massive Project
Inter Miami has secured a thirty-year lease with the city for the use of the public land, with options to extend up to 99 years. The club will pay $588,079 annually once the stadium opens in 2026, plus an additional three million dollars for commercial development, totaling over $3.5 million per year.
The 131-acre complex is a transformative addition to Miami. In addition to the stadium, which will increase capacity from 21,550 at Chase Stadium to 26,700 at Freedom Park, the site will feature Miami’s largest public park, covering 58 acres. Surrounding the park will be sports courts, shops, entertainment venues, restaurants, hotels, and office spaces—all just seven kilometers from downtown and close to major highways.
David Beckham expressed his satisfaction, saying, “The Miami Freedom Park is the culmination of years of hard work and a vision to create a lasting legacy for Miami fans, the community, and South Florida. I'm thrilled to see this dream becoming a reality,” acknowledging the long administrative road needed to secure the former Melreese golf course site.
The project has widespread support, including $8 million in funding from the government of Florida under Governor Ron DeSantis. Expected to create 15,000 direct and indirect jobs, Freedom Park will also generate over $40 million annually in state and local tax revenue.
Opening in 2026 and a New Era for Inter Miami
The stadium will host Inter Miami's matches beginning in early 2026 after the first construction phase. Although Freedom Park won’t host FIFA World Cup games, the event provides an excellent showcase for Inter Miami’s new gem as fans and media flock to South Florida.
As Asensi describes it, "This is the most exciting project in the sports industry. We're talking about a stadium, a complete district, and the largest open park in Miami." Freedom Park is set to become a cornerstone of Inter Miami’s future, offering the club an unmatched foundation to grow and thrive.
