Juan Mata Follows in Beckham’s Footsteps as an MLS Investor
Spanish footballer Juan Mata steps into the business side of football by becoming a partner and investor in San Diego FC, the new MLS franchise. At 36, Mata joins this ambitious project with the goal of contributing his experience both on and off the pitch.
San Diego FC, set to debut in the 2025 season as the 30th team in the league, will be led by Mikey Varas and will feature Mexican star Hirving Lozano. In a statement, the club highlighted that Mata is the first active international player to invest in an MLS franchise, following in the footsteps of David Beckham, who turned his connection with U.S. soccer into the creation of Inter Miami.
A city with sports potential
San Diego, one of the largest cities in the United States, is looking to solidify its sports presence after years of limitations. With only the San Diego Padres representing the city in major men’s leagues, soccer emerges as a significant opportunity to draw fans in the region.
Beyond his role as an investor, Mata is known for his social work through Common Goal, an initiative encouraging the football community to donate a portion of their earnings to charitable causes. This vision aligns with the values of San Diego FC and its owners, including businessman Mohamed Mansour.
Currently playing for the Western Sydney Wanderers, Mata also adds this venture to other investments, such as his involvement in Formula 1 with the Alpine team. By joining San Diego FC, he reinforces his role as a leader both on the field and in business.
