Riqui Puig Plays 30 Minutes with Serious Injury and Provides Assist for LA Galaxy's Victory
The former Barcelona player suffered an ACL tear and continued playing for thirty more minutes. His effort helped LA Galaxy win the Western Conference title.
Spanish midfielder Riqui Puig tore the ACL in his left knee during the MLS Western Conference final, which LA Galaxy won 3-0 against Seattle Sounders on Saturday, the club confirmed on Sunday. Despite the injury, Puig continued playing for over thirty minutes.
The former Barcelona player will miss the MLS Cup final on December 7, where the Galaxy will face New York Red Bulls at home.
"Puig injured himself in the second half of the match against the Sounders and continued playing for more than thirty minutes despite the injury, even providing the assist for Dejan Joveljic's winning goal," LA Galaxy said in a statement.
Puig, who has been one of the Galaxy’s standout performers in recent weeks, will undergo surgery at a yet-to-be-determined date.
After the confirmation of his serious injury, Spanish midfielder, former Barcelona player, posted a message on his social media:
"Today begins a new challenge. I will be off the pitch for several months, but am already looking towards and motivated to return stronger than ever and ready to continue making history in this club.
THANK YOU to everyone for your messages of support and love, they truly give me strength to tackle this recovery.
I’m so proud of how hard we’ve fought to get here, and I know my teammates will give their all to bring the trophy home. 🏆
Even though I can’t be on the field, I’ll be cheering from the sidelines with the same passion as always.
Let’s go, Galaxy! Keep making us dream 🌟"
