After an outstanding campaign with the Argentina National Team at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Lionel Messi is back with Inter Miami. The Argentine captain returned to the club's training sessions on Wednesday after spending nearly 10 days on vacation in his home country following Argentina's defeat to Spain in the World Cup Final.
The Florida-based club shared a photo of the forward arriving at its training facility in Fort Lauderdale, holding his traditional mate, an image that quickly caught the attention of fans. His return has raised expectations as supporters look forward to seeing him back on the pitch after he missed the club's last two matches.
Back After a Memorable World Cup
Messi had not trained with Inter Miami since May, when Major League Soccer (MLS) paused its season for the World Cup and the Argentine joined the Argentina National Team for the tournament.
Following the July 19 final, in which Argentina suffered a narrow defeat to Spain, the World Cup-winning captain returned home alongside Rodrigo De Paul, his teammate with both the national team and Inter Miami, to enjoy a well-earned break before rejoining club duties.
While Inter Miami confirmed Messi's return through a social media post, the club did not reveal whether De Paul had also rejoined the squad.
Inter Miami Awaits the Return of Its Stars
During the absence of its two Argentine stars, Inter Miami continued its strong form by earning victories over Chicago Fire and CF Montréal, keeping the team on track ahead of the return of its biggest names.
Both players could be back in action this Saturday against Columbus Crew, or on August 5 when Inter Miami opens its Leagues Cup campaign against Mexican side Atlético de San Luis.
Both Messi and De Paul had also been selected for the 2026 MLS All-Star Game, featuring the top players from MLS and Liga MX, but were ultimately excused from the event to prioritize their recovery following the demanding World Cup schedule.
After the final defeat, 39-year-old Lionel Messi admitted on social media that the loss was extremely painful, acknowledging that it would take time to heal from coming so close to winning another World Cup title with the Argentina National Team.
