(VIDEO) Heung-Min Son’s Olympic Goal in Tottenham vs. Manchester United
The South Korean forward Heung-Min Son of Tottenham scored an Olympic goal in his team's victory over Manchester United in the Quarterfinals of the English League Cup (EFL).
It was the 88th minute when the player took a corner kick that ended up in the net of the "Red Devils," but to the surprise of many, no player touched the ball.
Tottenham Hotspur, who were leading 3-0 and nearly saw their advantage slip away, sealed their victory over Manchester United and are now just two matches away from ending a 16-year trophy drought in the League Cup.
Ange Postecoglou's side secured a wild win, having been 3-0 up in the 54th minute, but they ended up suffering due to youthful mistakes from their goalkeeper, Fraser Forster, until Son, from a corner kick, sealed Spurs' passage to the tournament semifinals.
After defeating Manchester City over the weekend in Rúben Amorim's best victory since joining United, the Red Devils were met with a brace from Solanke, first capitalizing on a poor clearance by Altay Bayindir and then getting past Lisandro Martínez, plus a goal from Dejan Kulusevski, who pounced on a poor clearance from the Argentine, essentially bidding farewell to the cup.
However, starting from the 60th minute, Forster's mistakes began, gifting two goals in less than ten minutes.
First, while attempting to play out from the back, he handed the ball to Bruno Fernandes, who delivered a perfect assist for Joshua Zirkzee to reduce the deficit.
There was still plenty of time, and Forster's errors heightened the nerves of the Spurs, as he took forever to clear the ball, and Amad Diallo closed in on him, causing the ball to deflect off him and go straight into the net.
Out of nowhere, a completely outclassed United were now very much alive, while Tottenham grew increasingly nervous.
United had some chances, though not clear-cut, but Son, from a corner where Bayindir claimed a foul on Lucas Bergvall in the jump, scored an Olympic goal to seal the match.
In the final moments, Johnny Evans scored from another corner, but there was no time left for another miraculous comeback to keep United alive, a team whose last League Cup victory came in 2023 against Newcastle United.
Tottenham continues to hope for a title 16 years after their last League Cup win in 2008 under Juande Ramos.
Manchester United defeated Leicester City 5-2 at home in their last match, with Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes each scoring twice.
In the most recent encounter between the two teams, Tottenham won 3-0 in a Premier League match at Old Trafford in September. Brennan Johnson gave Spurs an early lead in the 3rd minute, and Dejan Kulusevski and Dominic Solanke also scored.
Tottenham has had the upper hand in recent encounters, remaining unbeaten in their last four matches against Manchester United. United were seeking their first win over Spurs since October 2022. During this unbeaten streak, Spurs outscored United 9-4.
Four players lead Tottenham's League Cup scoring table with one goal each, while Alejandro Garnacho has been the standout player for Manchester United, with three goals in the competition. He is tied for third among the top scorers of the 2024/2025 League Cup.
Tottenham played their only home match of this League Cup season in their win over Manchester City, while Manchester United had yet to play away in the competition. Last season, United won all three of their FA Cup away matches.
In their last six matches across all competitions, Tottenham registered one win, three draws, and two losses, scoring 12 goals and conceding 9. They scored first in four of those matches, with most of their goals (nine) coming in the first half. Their opponents scored three goals in the first 45 minutes.
Manchester United won four and lost two of their last six matches, scoring 13 goals and conceding 9. They scored first in two of those contests, with five goals in the first half, while their opponents found the net four times before the break.
