Arsenal Kicks Off 2025 with a Victory and Closes the Gap in the Premier League
With a 3-1 victory over Brentford in the New Year London derby, Mikel Arteta’s team not only cut the gap with the "Reds" but also reclaimed second place in the standings.
The start of 2025 in the Premier League has reignited the hopes of Arsenal, who remain determined to chase down Liverpool, the league leaders.
Comeback and Dominance by the Gunners
Mikel Arteta’s side wrapped up the first half of the English season with their third consecutive win. Goals by Gabriel Jesus, Mikel Merino, and Gabriel Martinelli secured the comeback for Arsenal, who recovered from an early goal by Bryan Mbeumo in the 13th minute.
The Cameroonian's goal came after Martin Odegaard lost possession in midfield. Mikkel Damsgaard intercepted the ball, drove forward, and found Mbeumo, who slotted a clinical finish past David Raya. Although Arsenal nearly conceded again in the 28th minute, the Spanish goalkeeper made a vital save to deny Yegor Yarmolyuk's effort from crossing the line.
From that moment, the Gunners seized control of the game. The equalizer came through Gabriel Jesus, who capitalized on a rebound after Thomas Partey’s shot was stopped by Mark Flekken, Brentford's goalkeeper.
The Turning Point
The go-ahead goal came in the second half when Mikel Merino scored following a corner kick taken by young talent Ethan Nwaneri. A mistake by Flekken left the ball at Merino’s feet, and he made no mistake from close range. Just three minutes later, Gabriel Martinelli sealed the win with a powerful shot after Nathan Collins failed to clear the danger.
Brentford Struggles to Respond
Brentford, managed by Thomas Frank, tried to rally with multiple substitutions in the closing minutes, introducing Ji-Soo Kim, Mathias Jensen, Paris Maghoma, and Kevin Schade. However, they were unable to overcome Arsenal’s dominance, as the Gunners managed the final stages of the match with the introductions of Myles Lewis-Skelly, Leandro Trossard, and Declan Rice.
Arsenal’s Fight for the Premier League
With this victory, Arsenal reclaimed second place in the Premier League, pushing Nottingham Forest down to third. The Gunners now sit six points behind leaders Liverpool, who still have a game in hand against Everton.
The title race remains alive, and Mikel Arteta’s team is determined to maintain their momentum and keep the pressure on Liverpool as the second half of the season unfolds.
