Manchester United's Next Manager and His Admiration for Mourinho
Sporting Portugal’s head coach, Rúben Amorim, who will officially join Manchester United as their new manager next week, shared that José Mourinho taught him "that you can win it all" during his time as Mourinho’s mentee with the club he’s now set to lead.
"(Mourinho) showed me that you can win everything and still be a completely different person from what people sometimes think," Amorim stated in a press conference ahead of Sporting’s Champions League clash with Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City on Tuesday in Lisbon.
"He was a coach who opened doors for everyone, especially in his era, and he’s still special. When he first appeared, we knew his teams would win, and that was significant for us as Portuguese, as it made us believe in ourselves a bit more," Amorim added. Amorim will face Manchester City in his second-to-last match with Sporting before heading to Old Trafford. He revealed that his team will maintain the same offensive "identity" that’s led them to win every match so far in the Portuguese league.
Reflecting on his last encounter with City (a tough 0-5 loss in 2022), Amorim said he feels like a "better coach" now, though "Guardiola is also a better coach." He also noted that Sporting now has a roster ready "to play a more complete game."
