Pep Guardiola Gets Ahead of Manchester City with Player Departure Announcement
The coach announced Kalvin Phillips' departure at a press conference. Shortly after, the club issued an official statement revealing his destination.
Pep Guardiola, Manchester City manager, confirmed Kalvin Phillips' loan move to Ipswich Town and left João Cancelo's future in question, as he still belongs to the 'Sky Blues'.
The Portuguese full-back, who has not played for City since January 2023, has been on loan at Bayern Munich and Barcelona and still has a contract with Manchester.
"He is training with us and we will see. He might stay, or he might go out on loan. We greeted each other and talked at training," Guardiola said, after Cancelo decided to leave in 2023 due to disagreements about his playing time.
"What happens now depends on his agent. We will treat him like the rest of the players, with respect and trying to get the best out of him. I have never doubted his quality, but we need to see what will happen."
Regarding Phillips, Guardiola confirmed his move to Ipswich is "done".
"He has decided to go there. He needs to get minutes and recover. Play, play, and play. Maybe he can come back here in the future."
And then came the announcement
Shortly after Pep Guardiola's press conference, Manchester City announced on their social media channels the agreement with Ipswich Town for the loan of the English midfielder.
The English midfielder was signed by City in the summer of 2022 for $55 million but has only made 31 appearances since. Last winter, he was loaned to West Ham United, where he played in just ten matches.
