Salah Leads Liverpool Comeback to Take the Lead
A goal from Mohamed Salah completed Liverpool's comeback against Brighton, sealing a win at Anfield and putting them back at the top of the Premier League, helped by Manchester City’s slip-up against Bournemouth.
Arne Slot’s squad only needed a week to return to the top of the English league. They had briefly fallen from first place last week after a draw against Arsenal, but now they’re back on top, grinding out a hard-fought win against Brighton, one of the season’s most in-form teams.
Brighton proved tough in the first half, with Fabian Hürzeler’s squad pushing hard. They could have secured the win early on but couldn’t keep up as Luis Díaz came off the bench and sparked Liverpool’s resurgence. Brighton came into this match on a three-game unbeaten streak, with only one loss before facing Liverpool. They started strong, even taking the lead. Just like in their previous four Premier League matches against Liverpool, Brighton opened the scoring.
Liverpool survived an early scare from Darwin Núñez’s long-range effort, but Bart Verbruggen made the save. Soon after, in the 15th minute, Brighton took the lead. A pass from Karou Mitoma into the box barely missed Georginio Rutter, but Danny Welbeck got a touch that confused Liverpool’s defense. Ferdi Kadioglu pounced, his powerful shot beating Caoimhin Kelleher after hitting the post.
With Liverpool looking rattled, Brighton almost doubled their lead when Georginio Rutter found himself one-on-one, but Kelleher’s left foot kept Liverpool in the game. Danny Welbeck also came close with a free-kick just outside the box, skimming the post.
The game shifted in the second half as Liverpool came out with renewed energy, setting a faster pace. Salah nearly scored after a quick play that started from a goal kick and ended with Darwin Núñez flicking the ball his way, but Verbruggen was quick to save.
Then, in the 69th minute, Liverpool finally equalized. Virgil Van Dijk set up Cody Gakpo, who whipped the ball into the box. Núñez faked a touch, letting the ball slip past him and into the Brighton goal.
Just three minutes later, Liverpool completed the comeback. Curtis Jones started a textbook counterattack that ended with Salah, who found space in the box and placed a perfect shot into the top corner, beyond Verbruggen’s reach. That was game over. Liverpool held off Brighton’s late efforts to equalize and reclaimed the Premier League lead.
