The Historic Record Haaland is Chasing
Erling Haaland has set his sights on breaking Alan Shearer’s all-time Premier League goal record of 260. Haaland’s recent contract extension with Manchester City until 2034 reflects his ambition to become the league’s top scorer. "It’s something special, and I’ll do everything I can to achieve it," said the Norwegian striker after signing his new deal.
Shearer, who reached his record playing for Southampton, Blackburn Rovers, and Newcastle United, has not been surpassed by players like Harry Kane (213 goals), Wayne Rooney (208), or Sergio Agüero (184). Meanwhile, Haaland has already scored 79 goals in 87 Premier League matches. In his first season, he netted 36 goals, breaking the single-season record previously shared by Andy Cole and Alan Shearer. Although his numbers have dipped this year, he still leads the Golden Boot race with 18 goals, a trophy he has won in the past two seasons.
"I’m going to be here for a long time," Haaland stated. "Now I can focus on improving and giving the fans what they want. My goal is to get closer to the all-time scoring record in the future. It won’t be easy, but it’s something special." Staying at City until he’s 34 greatly increases his chances of surpassing Shearer’s historic tally.
Shearer himself acknowledged that his record is under threat. "If Haaland stays for that long, I have no doubt he’ll break it," he told the BBC. "My record will go someday. This deal benefits both the player and the club: Haaland will earn more money, and City secures one of its greatest assets."
However, Shearer cautioned that the contract doesn’t guarantee Haaland will stay until 2034. "I’d be surprised if he’s still at City when he’s 34. This agreement ensures that no one can take him for free if he decides to leave, but nothing is set in stone," he concluded.
