Maresca Focuses on Correcting After City’s Tough Defeat Against Arsenal in the Community Shield
Enzo Maresca officially debuted as Manchester City coach with an unexpected blow.
A complicated debut for Maresca
Enzo Maresca's debut as Manchester City coach in the Community Shield left more questions than answers. The team fell 3-0 to Arsenal at the Principality Stadium, in a match that crumbled from the start. Barely 23 seconds had passed when Riccardo Calafiori opened the scoring, and then Kai Havertz and Martin Odegaard extended the lead. The defeat, beside being harsh due to the result, matched a historical record, since 1906, with Harry Newbould, no City manager had lost by three or more goals in their official debut.
"We have many things to improve."
Maresca acknowledged that the early goal affected his team: "I think the goal we conceded 25 seconds into the match unfortunately affected the game at that moment. After that, the reaction was quite good before the second goal; we had three or four chances to equalize, but conceding the second made it more complicated." Despite the defeat, the Italian remained calm and focused on the start of the Premier League: "It's just the beginning. Starting next Sunday, the league begins and the focus has to be there. We have many things to improve. The season has just begun, even when we win, there are things we need to do better."
Urgent adjustments before the Premier debut
The statistics reflected the Citizens' difficulties with 12 attempts, five on target, but only 0.8 expected goals (xG). Erling Haaland and Phil Foden, two of the stars, barely managed to get into the game. With only a week until the debut against Bournemouth, the challenge is great. "In general, I'm always worried, even when we win. We have to reset, analyze the match, and think about the next one starting Tuesday," added Maresca. The initial blow was strong, but the coach made it clear that his work is just beginning, City will need to adjust quickly if they want to avoid this defeat being more than just a bump in the road.
