Alexander-Arnold boos 'not nice' but Robertson and Slot respect Liverpool fans
Trent Alexander-Arnold was jeered by many Liverpool fans during the Premier League champions' 2-2 draw with Arsenal.
Andy Robertson conceded it was not nice to hear Liverpool supporters boo Trent Alexander-Arnold during Sunday's 2-2 draw with Arsenal, though he and boss Arne Slot respect that fans can have their own opinions.
The Premier League champions raced into a 2-0 lead after receiving a guard of honour from the Gunners, with Cody Gakpo and Luis Diaz scoring within 87 seconds midway through the first half.
However, Gabriel Martinelli and Mikel Merino netted as Arsenal roared back in the second half, and they held on for a point despite the latter being sent off for two bookable offences late on.
Alexander-Arnold, who announced he was leaving Liverpool this week and is expected to join Real Madrid, replaced Conor Bradley as a 67th-minute substitute.
His arrival was loudly booed by many supporters, as were his first few touches, and Robertson was disappointed to see a close friend receive that treatment.
"I'm disappointed to lose a good friend. He's an amazing player and an amazing person. He has pushed me through and made me a better player," Robertson told Sky Sports.
"His legacy will always be there, he's done so much for this club. He will be missed for me as one of my best friends in the game. We've done it all together. He's took me to levels I never knew existed.
"It hasn't been an easy one for Trent, but he has made the decision. It was not nice to see him get booed, but you can't tell people how to feel.
"That's how I feel about it, and I'm not going to tell anyone else how to feel about it."
Slot also said he could not tell Liverpool's supporters how they should react to Alexander-Arnold, while praising the right-back's performance off the bench.
"In general life, the good thing about living in Europe is everyone can have their opinion. That's the same here in Liverpool," Slot told Sky Sports.
"There were people who were not so happy, there were people who were happy for him. They clapped for him. A few of them booed.
"Everyone is entitled to their opinion. Towards the end, a few of them got more and more positive. But for me, it's simple. I owe it to the team, to the fans, to play a team that can win a game of football.
"Trent showed it because he had two or three incredible balls. We were so close to winning it, partly because of him.
"For me, it's not that difficult. For the fans... they can have the reaction they want. I will always back my players, the ones I lead and wear the red shirt.
"It would not be fair to the whole of Liverpool to focus on the few that booed. If they want to, it's fine by me. But there were a lot of people who were really positive as well."
Alexander-Arnold played nine passes into the final third on Sunday, with only Mohamed Salah (18) and Dominik Szoboszlai (11) – both of whom played 90 minutes – managing more.
Alexander-Arnold could yet make two more appearances for the champions, who visit Brighton on May 19, then host Crystal Palace on the final day.
