Amorim 'really mad' at inconsistency as Man Utd show promise at Anfield
Manchester United halted their three-game losing run at Anfield, but Ruben Amorim was left frustrated by their inconsistency.
Ruben Amorim was "really mad" after Manchester United drew 2-2 with Liverpool on Sunday, questioning why the Red Devils could not hit that level in other recent games.
Amad Diallo scored an 80th-minute equaliser as United fought back to earn a point at Anfield, after Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah had scored to put Liverpool 2-1 up.
United remain winless in their last 10 trips to Liverpool (five draws, five losses), and have only taken eight points from nine Premier League games under Amorim, winning twice.
However, the former Sporting CP boss oversaw a much-improved performance from his side, who also earned a statement result when fighting back to beat another rival, Manchester City, last month.
United have suffered defeats to Arsenal, Nottingham Forest, Bournemouth, Wolves and Newcastle United since the Portuguese took the reins, and he lamented their inconsistency when speaking to Sky Sports after the game.
Asked if United were disappointed not to win the match, he said: "Yes, because the expectations were so much different than what we saw during the game.
"I think I get more mad because of the other games so it's even harder to understand some things.
"This is not about the system, it's not about the technique. It's about something else and this is hard to understand, even for the coach.
"I think it was a point deserved but it is just one point and I think we should get mad and disappointed, more than the other day against Newcastle, or Bournemouth, Nottingham Forest – more than those days, today we need to be really disappointed."
Harry Maguire missed a glorious chance to win the game in the seventh minute of second-half stoppage time, firing over the bar when presented with a chance worth 0.28 expected goals – United's clearest of the game.
United were solid at the back and relentlessly targeted Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold, sending 54% of their attacks down his flank, and Amorim was impressed by many aspects of their display.
"If we play against Liverpool every day we will do that," he said. "So we have to do it against any opponent and understand that we have to fight really bad to get out of this situation.
"The way we were really competitive, that is the crucial thing going forward. I'm happy for the performance, not happy for the result but I'm really mad because of the other games."
