Porto and Conceição Part Ways
The Portuguese club announced the coach's decision to unilaterally terminate the contract that tied him to the club after seven seasons at the helm.
Porto's head coach, Sérgio Conceição, will not continue in his role with the Portuguese club, which he has held for the past seven years.
In a statement released early this morning to the Portuguese Securities Market Commission (CMVM), the club announced that Conceição's tenure with the "Dragons" will end in late June, when his contract expires.
Sérgio Conceição, who has won three league titles with the "Dragons," was renewed for another four years on April 25 by Porto's former president, Jorge Nuno Pinto da Costa. However, just two days later, on April 27, Pinto da Costa lost the elections, and former coach André Villas-Boas took over the club's presidency.
According to Porto's statement, Sérgio Conceição has chosen "unilateral termination." For his part, the coach explained in another statement that he is leaving "with a sense of duty fulfilled" after winning 11 titles.
Sérgio Conceição, 49, took charge of Porto in 2017 and departs after winning three league titles, four Portuguese Cups, three Portuguese Super Cups, and one League Cup. During this time, he became the coach with the most matches (379), most victories (274), and most titles (11) in the club's history.
Before his tenure at Porto, he managed French club Nantes and Portuguese clubs Braga and Vitória de Guimarães. As a player, his career also included a stint at Porto, where he trained and won three league titles, but he spent most of his playing career in Italy, representing Lazio, Parma, and Inter Milan.
