Trabzonspor Confirms Stefan Savic's Transfer
Trabzonspor has confirmed the signing of Stefan Savic, who is already traveling to Turkey to join his new team, according to an official statement from the club. This comes after nine seasons and 297 matches with Atlético de Madrid, where he won three titles under Diego Simeone.
"Our new signing, Stefan Savic, will be in Trabzon tonight. We look forward to seeing all our fans at Trabzon Airport for this great meeting!" announced Trabzonspor, which has yet to specify the duration of the Montenegrin defender's contract or the details of his transfer from the Madrid club.
Savic's departure from Atlético was anticipated. On May 19, in the last match at the Cívitas Metropolitano Stadium of the past season, he already staged his farewell, receiving a send-off from the fans after an unwavering commitment to Atlético, with whom he was LaLiga champion in 2020-21, won the Europa League and the UEFA Super Cup in 2018, and was a finalist in the Champions League, even starting, in the 2016 final lost at San Siro.
His automatic contract extension for one more year was voided, although the player still joined pre-season training under Diego Simeone while waiting for a new destination, concluding his time at Atlético with 297 matches, 277 as a starter, three goals, three assists, 86 yellow cards, and nine red cards, from 2015 to 2024.
At 33, Savic also previously played for Fiorentina, with 108 appearances between 2012 and 2015, scoring four goals and providing one assist; for Manchester City (21 appearances between 2011 and 2012); for Partizan (28 matches in 2010-11); and for Borca, with 25 matches.
The Montenegrin international, with 73 caps, is the sixth departure from Atlético's squad compared to last season. Central defenders Mario Hermoso and Gabriel Paulista have already left due to contract expiration; midfielder Saúl Ñíguez has been loaned to Sevilla; and forwards Álvaro Morata, who was transferred for a buyout clause of 13 million euros by Milan, and Memphis Depay, whose contract through 2025 has not been executed.
