FC Barcelona Thrashes and Breathes Easy Again in the Champions League
FC Barcelona secured a dominant victory in the second matchday of the new UEFA Champions League format against Young Boys with a 5-0 win. Robert Lewandowski scored twice, with Iñigo Martínez and Raphinha adding goals, and an own goal by Ali Kamara sealing the result.
Barcelona made their Champions League season debut at Montjuïc, initially energized by the thousand Swiss fans who traveled to support their team. However, the Swiss supporters' spirits were dampened early on when Lewandowski scored an easy goal from close range in the 8th minute, following what appeared to be a wayward shot by Raphinha.
Young Boys, dominant in Swiss football over the last decade, are struggling this season, languishing at the bottom of their league table with only one win. Their surrender to Barcelona was evident, with the home team controlling over 75% possession. Despite the dominance, the game lacked tempo, and Young Boys managed a few timid attacks, with Monteiro and Colley missing the target in the first half-hour.
Barcelona effectively sealed the match in three minutes. Raphinha scored from a defensive rebound off a Pedri shot, and Iñigo Martínez headed in a lateral free-kick from the midfielder for the third goal. Five minutes into the second half, Lewandowski made it 4-0, scoring from a corner delivered by Raphinha, with Iñigo Martínez assisting with a header.
With the game decided, the match slowed down despite crowd applauses for Ansu Fati and Frenkie de Jong, who returned to play after being sidelined for over five months due to a recurring ankle injury. Young Boys' struggles were compounded by an own goal by Camara, who deflected a cross from Balde into his own net, making it 5-0 ten minutes before the end.
Monteiro, the most active player for Young Boys, came close to scoring a consolation goal. He first hit the crossbar and then scored in added time, but the goal was disallowed for offside.
