Marquinhos is Making History With PSG
The Brazilian defender Marquinhos, starting in Wednesday's first-leg match of the Champions League quarter-finals against Barcelona, has now become the player with the most appearances for Paris Saint-Germain, surpassing defender Jean-Marc Pilorget.
He wore the PSG jersey for the 436th time, one more than Pilorget's appearances between 1975 and 1989. The PSG captain, who joined the club in July 2013 at just 19 years old, under the ownership of Qatari investors, has been steadily climbing the ranks within the club, becoming one of the most respected in the locker room and beloved by the fans.
It seems likely that Marquinhos will raise the bar even higher with this record, as the player renewed his commitment to PSG until 2028 last May.
He has already made a significant mark on the club, arriving from Roma as a young prospect coveted by top European clubs for his potential.
In the shadow of his compatriot Thiago Silva in his early years, Marquinhos inherited the captain's armband when the former Milan player, who had arrived in Paris in 2012, left for Chelsea after eight seasons at the Parc des Princes.
PSG fans then discovered a solid leader whom they value for his commitment to the colors both when things are going well and when they have suffered setbacks, especially on the European stage.
The player, who played his 286th match in the French league a few days ago, more than any other Parisian in the 21st century, has achieved significant success in the French capital.
Eight French league titles, five French Cups, three League Cups, seven Super Cups, and a Champions League final have filled his trophy cabinet, alongside the 2019 Copa America and the 2016 Olympic gold with Brazil, for which he has played 84 matches and scored 7 goals.
