Viktor Gyökeres: Setting Himself Apart from Haaland and Jonathan David
Sporting Lisbon's striker Viktor Gyökeres, with an impressive 24 goals in 20 games this season, is ready to challenge both Erling Haaland and Manchester City, while Jonathan David leads Lille against Juventus’s Dusan Vlahovic in the Champions League's fourth matchday.
Gyökeres is turning heads this season. In his Champions League debut, he’s already scored twice in three games, adding to his 20 goals in 16 appearances for Sporting and four in as many games for Sweden. His efficiency is striking, netting a goal every two shots on target – out of 40 total attempts, 24 found the back of the net.
His current form is red-hot, with stats exceeding expectations (expected goals of 19.03 vs. 24 actual goals). He’s on fire lately, scoring four in his last game against Estrela de Amadora, six over the last two, and eight in the past four. Only five of his 20 appearances this season ended scoreless.
As he prepares for the challenge of facing Haaland and City – and with Sporting’s coach Ruben Amorim soon heading to Manchester United – Gyökeres is ready to take on Haaland, who arrives with 104 goals in 112 matches for City and an astonishing 44 in 42 Champions League games. Haaland has 17 goals in 18 games this season: 14 for City and three for Norway, where he’s now the national team’s all-time top scorer.
Similarly, Tuesday's Lille-Juventus clash pits two more top scorers against each other. Jonathan David, with 12 goals in 17 games this season, will face Vlahovic, who’s scored eight in 14 appearances for Juventus but just one in his last five..
Despite his current form, Vlahovic lags behind his expected goals of 9.71, whereas David has 17 shots on target, matching Vlahovic’s total, but with four more goals to his name. David’s goals have been key to Lille’s surprising success, as they recently defeated Real Madrid (1-0) and Atlético Madrid (3-1) in Europe, highlighting his role as a driving force for his team.
