Trent Alexander-Arnold Compares Anfield and the Bernabéu
After the match, the British fullback took the opportunity to recall his former home, Anfield, making a comparison that is sure to spark reactions among many Liverpool fans.
English defender Trent Alexander-Arnold delivered an outstanding performance at the Santiago Bernabéu during the 3-0 win against Manchester City in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League Round of 16.
The Atmosphere at Anfield
In the post-match interview, Alexander-Arnold said he feels fortunate to have played for two clubs capable of turning European nights into something very special within their stadiums. While he didn’t mention it directly, the reference seemed clear: he was also talking about Anfield, a stadium whose atmosphere is considered one of the most impressive in Europe during Champions League games.
The Merseyside crowd is famous for the pressure they exert when the Reds play at home. Its atmosphere is almost mythical. John Benjamin Toshack once said that when the team attacked towards the goal facing The Kop, the historic stand in the stadium, he felt as if “the wind was blowing on our backs,” while defending in that direction, it seemed the stadium “swallowed” the opponent.
Fernando Morientes, who played for both Real Madrid and Liverpool, has also recalled on several occasions how spectacular the atmosphere at Anfield can be. In the same vein, Rafa Benítez, who managed the Merseyside side, stated that it is one of the most impressive atmospheres he has experienced in a stadium.
Anfield is a stadium capable of influencing even the scoreline. Just remember the historic comeback against FC Barcelona in 2019, one of the most memorable nights in recent Champions League history.
Controversy and Homecoming
However, Alexander-Arnold’s comments may spark controversy in England. The defender did not leave Liverpool on the best terms, evidenced by the boos he received earlier this season when returning to Anfield in November. The stadium hadn’t forgotten his departure, and the academy graduate didn’t exactly receive the warmest welcome.
The fans’ reaction is largely explained by the fact that Alexander-Arnold always presented himself as just another supporter of the club. Many even thought he would spend most of his career at Liverpool, following in the footsteps of a legend like Steven Gerrard. His move to Madrid, however, quickly changed many supporters’ perceptions.
Perhaps his words are also intended to smooth things over in England and show that Liverpool still holds a very special place in his heart.
We’ll have to wait for his next return to Anfield to see what kind of reception The Kop has prepared for him.
