UEFA Punish Olympique de Marseille with Partial Closure of Its Stadium
The French team will have to serve the sanction in the first leg of the Europa League Round of 16 against Villarreal.
Olympique de Marseille will have to comply with the partial stadium closure sanction imposed by the UEFA Control, Ethics, and Disciplinary Committee in the next European competition match they play at home, which will be on the 7th against Villarreal, in the first leg of the Europa League Round of 16.
Following the incidents in the French team's match against Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk on February 22, the UEFA Appeals Body has ordered the enforcement of this sanction, issued on November 22, 2022, for the use of flares, which was suspended.
According to UEFA, in addition to the closure of the north stand of their stadium, the French club will have to pay six fines totaling 81 500 euros ($88 174).
The fine for the use of flares amounts to 41,500€, for throwing them 10,000€, for blocking public access 26,000€, for the use of laser pointers 20,000€, and for being responsible for the delay of the match 10,000€, an aspect for which their coach, Jean-Louis Gasset, was also cautioned.
