Jude Bellingham Sanctioned by UEFA for Controversial Gesture
The English midfielder was fined and given a one-match suspension, which has been deferred, allowing him to play in the Euro Cup quarter-finals
Jude Bellingham, midfielder for the English national team, was fined 30,000 euros ($32,400) and given a one-match suspension, which is deferred for a one-year probation period due to his gestures towards the Slovakian bench while celebrating his goal in the Euro 2024 round of 16 match. As a result, he will be able to play in the quarter-finals against Switzerland this Saturday.
"Fining the player of the English Football Association, Jude Bellingham, 30,000 euros and suspending him for one UEFA competition match for which he would otherwise be eligible for violating the basic rules of decent conduct. This suspension is not immediately enforced and is subject to a probationary period of one year from the date of this decision," announced UEFA's Control, Ethics, and Disciplinary Body in a statement published on their official website this Friday.
After his goal in the 95th minute, which forced extra time and led to the English team's eventual victory through a goal by Harry Kane in the early moments of extra time, the Real Madrid player made derogatory gestures towards the Slovakian bench.
That same night, after the match, Bellingham explained on his social media that the celebration was "an inside joke gesture towards some close friends who were at the match."
"Nothing but respect for how the Slovakian team played tonight," he added.
Additionally, UEFA's Control, Ethics, and Disciplinary Body decided this Friday to fine the English Football Association 11,000 euros ($11,880); 10,000 for "crowd disturbances" and 1,000 for "lighting fireworks" by their fans.
