Xherdan Shaqiri Retires from the Swiss National Team
Swiss footballer of Kosovar origin, Xherdan Shaqiri, one of the best players in the history of the central European country, has announced his retirement from the national team after 125 appearances and 32 goals.
The 32-year-old right winger, currently with the Chicago Fire in MLS, made this announcement on social media, nine days after his last match for Switzerland. In that match, he came on in extra time during the Euro quarterfinals against England and nearly scored an olympic goal from a corner kick.
In the group stage, he scored against Scotland, his only goal in the Euro but enough to make him the first player in history to score in three World Cups and three consecutive European Championships.
Known for his stocky build, the former player for teams such as Basel, Bayern Munich, Liverpool, and Inter Milan has left numerous memorable goals while wearing the colors of the "Nati." Perhaps the most unforgettable for his fans is the spectacular bicycle kick he scored against Poland in Euro 2016.
