Alexia Putellas Strengthens Ballon d’Or Candidacy With Spectacular Euro
The Barcelona and Spain star has delivered a dazzling performance at Euro 2025, posting historic numbers that reinforce her status as the leading contender for her third Ballon d’Or.
Dominating at Euro 2025
Alexia Putellas is experiencing one of the most impressive stretches of her career. At Euro 2025, she has not only played a key role in Spain’s success but also posted record-breaking stats. With 4 assists, she leads the tournament in that category. She’s also scored 3 goals, all with her left foot, making her the second-highest scorer of the competition.
Her playmaking has been unmatched: she has created 18 scoring chances, the highest number ever recorded by a European player in a single edition of the Euros or World Cup since 2011. She’s also earned two Player of the Match awards, scored the best goal of Matchday 1 against Portugal, and received a perfect Sofascore rating in the group stage match against Belgium.
Despite being a midfielder, she’s contributed defensively as well with 14 clearances, the highest number for a non-defender on her team. She ranks fourth in total shots (17) and also fourth in shots on target (6, plus one that hit the post).
Stellar Season With Barcelona and Spain
At the club level, Putellas has also made her mark. In the Liga F, she scored 16 goals and provided 11 assists. In the Champions League, she added 3 goals and 4 assists, and in other domestic competitions she added more contributions to her tally. Overall, she finished the season with 22 goals and 17 assists for Barcelona, and 28 goals and 21 assists including her time with the national team.
This year, she became the all-time top scorer of Barcelona Femení with 212 goals, trailing only Lionel Messi and César Rodríguez in club history. She was also the first player across Europe’s top five leagues to hit double digits in both goals and assists—remarkably, from a midfield position.
Beyond the Pitch: Global Impact
Alexia Putellas’ legacy extends well beyond the field. Since launching her foundation in 2023, she has championed emotional education through football with projects in Miami, Colombia, Spain, Mexico, and soon in Santo Domingo. At 31, she is on the brink of becoming the first player in history to win three Ballon d’Or trophies—an achievement once thought impossible.
