England Crowned Back-to-Back Euro Champions After Penalty Shootout
The Lionesses edged past Spain in a dramatic final decided from the spot, with Hannah Hampton emerging as the hero with two crucial saves.
Spain Fell Just Short of a Historic Treble
Spain’s dream of adding the 2025 UEFA Women’s Euro to their World Cup and Nations League titles came to a heartbreaking end. Led by Montse Tomé, the Spanish side took the lead in the 25th minute through a powerful header from Mariona Caldentey, assisted by a pinpoint cross from Ona Batlle. For large stretches of the match, Spain imposed their possession-based style, threatening through Aitana Bonmatí, Olga Carmona, and Mariona herself.
Despite dominating the tempo and pushing forward, they couldn’t finish their chances. Late substitutes Salma Paralluelo, Claudia Pina, and Vicky López tried to spark a breakthrough, but were denied by a resolute English defense and standout saves from Hampton.
England Held Strong and Struck in the Shootout
The equalizer came in the 57th minute when Chloe Kelly raced down the flank and delivered a cross that Alessia Russo headed home. The Arsenal striker, who had scored just once in the tournament prior, delivered when it mattered most. Energized by the goal, England looked more confident, though Cata Coll denied a second from Kelly with a brilliant fingertip save.
Both coaches made key changes in search of the winner. Tomé brought on Claudia Pina for Alexia Putellas, while Sarina Wiegman introduced Michelle Agyemang for Russo. Pina nearly scored with her first touch, but again Hampton responded with a stellar stop. In the dying minutes, Paralluelo and Vicky López came close, but their efforts went wide.
In extra time, Spain piled on the pressure, but Paralluelo missed multiple chances. With the scoreboard still level, penalties were the decider. Despite Cata Coll saving two attempts, it wasn’t enough. Hampton matched her with two saves of her own—denying Mariona and Aitana—while Paralluelo missed the target.
Chloe Kelly buried the final penalty to give England a 3-1 shootout win and their second consecutive Euro title.

The match drew a crowd of 34,203 at St. Jakob-Park in Basel and was attended by royals from both nations. While Spain narrowly missed an unprecedented treble, England solidified their place at the top of women’s football in Europe—driven by composure, resilience, and a goalkeeper who delivered when it mattered most: Hannah Hampton.
