Burkina Faso Earns Historic First-Ever Wafcon Victory
Burkina Faso defeated Tanzania 2-1 to record the nation's first victory in Women's Africa Cup of Nations history and keep its quarterfinal hopes alive.
Burkina Faso made history on Friday by defeating Tanzania 2-1 in a Group B match at the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Casablanca, Morocco.
The victory marks Burkina Faso's first-ever win in the history of the Women's Africa Cup of Nations, giving the Stallions a crucial three points and keeping their hopes of reaching the quarterfinals alive.
Burkina Faso opened the scoring just before halftime when A. Kabré finished off an assist from R. Sawadogo in the 43rd minute, sending her side into the break with a deserved lead.
Tanzania responded early in the second half through Hasnath Ubamba, who equalized in the 55th minute and briefly restored momentum for a team that entered the match with the chance to clinch a place in the knockout stage.
Burkina Faso, however, continued to press and was rewarded when R. Sawadogo found the decisive goal, securing a memorable 2-1 victory and one of the biggest results in the country's women's football history.
Combined with South Africa's 2-2 draw against Ivory Coast, the outcome leaves Group B wide open heading into the final round of matches, with multiple teams still in contention for a place in the WAFCON quarterfinals.
