Banyana Banyana built its advantage through second-half goals from Thembi Kgatlana and Refiloe Jane, after Nigeria had been slightly better during a tightly contested opening 45 minutes.
The Super Falcons looked particularly dangerous when attacking with pace but failed to turn their best spells into a goal before halftime.
Kgatlana and Jane put South Africa in control
Banyana Banyana found the breakthrough in the 56th minute.
South Africa broke forward with pace and opened up the Nigerian defense, leaving Thembi Kgatlana with the opportunity to finish. The forward made no mistake to put her team 1-0 ahead.
Nigeria was forced to push higher up the pitch, and South Africa struck again in the 77th minute.
Refiloe Jane fired from inside the box and her shot took a deflection, changing the ball's trajectory and leaving the Nigerian goalkeeper unable to react as South Africa made it 2-0.
Jane sees red and Ucheibe gives Nigeria hope
The match took a dramatic turn late on. Jane went from scoring South Africa's second goal to being sent off, leaving Banyana Banyana down to 10 players and giving Nigeria a chance to fight back.
The Super Falcons pushed forward and found a lifeline deep into stoppage time.
In the 90+3 minute, an incident was reviewed by VAR and resulted in a penalty for Nigeria. Christy Ucheibe converted from the spot to make it 2-1 and set up a frantic finish.
Kaylin Swart saves South Africa on the final play
Kaylin Swart also emerged as one of the key figures in the dramatic closing stages. The South African goalkeeper had suffered a heavy collision earlier and came close to being substituted, but was ultimately able to continue.
That proved crucial.
With Nigeria desperately searching for an equalizer, Swart made the save that prevented a 2-2 scoreline on the final play of the match, preserving Banyana Banyana's victory.
South Africa held on with 10 players to secure the 2-1 win and a place in the 2027 Women's World Cup playoffs, keeping alive its hopes of reaching a third consecutive World Cup.
