Edinson Cavani Sidelined with Injury, Out of Uruguay's World Cup Qualifier Squad
As the Argentine football season nears its conclusion, teams are gearing up for the final matchday, with crucial games lined up from November 24 to 27. The spotlight, however, remains on Cavani's injury and its impact on both his club's ambitions and Uruguay's World Cup qualifier preparations.
BUENOS AIRES, Argentina.- In a significant blow to Uruguay's World Cup qualifying campaign, Edinson Cavani has been ruled out due to a muscle injury sustained during a match between Boca Juniors and Newell's Old Boys. Cavani's injury occurred during the second half when he chased down an opponent and felt a sharp pain in his hamstring, prompting his immediate substitution.
The severity of the injury was confirmed on Monday morning, revealing a muscle strain that will sideline Cavani for several weeks. This includes missing the Copa Argentina semi-final against Estudiantes and possibly the final league match against Godoy Cruz. Uruguay's head coach Marcelo Bielsa has subsequently withdrawn Cavani from the national team squad, replacing him with Federico Viñas from León de México.
Cavani's injury marks a setback for both his club and country. He had been gaining momentum at Boca Juniors, scoring three goals in 16 matches since joining the team. Despite his limited goal tally, his commitment and influence on the team have been widely praised. His absence will be felt in the upcoming fixtures, both for Boca Juniors and the Uruguayan national team.
In other football news, Boca Juniors secured a 1-0 victory over Newell’s Old Boys, thanks to a goal from Uruguayan Miguel Ángel Merentiel. Meanwhile, River Plate lost 3-1 to Rosario Central but remained at the top of Zone 1 in the league standings. In Zone 2, Godoy Cruz continues to lead, tied with Belgrano and Racing Club.
