England target Group L summit despite inconsistent World Cup form
England will look to secure top spot in Group L when they face Panama in their final World Cup group-stage match on Saturday at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford.
Thomas Tuchel's side has already booked its place in the knockout rounds after Friday's results, but victory remains crucial if England hopes to finish above Ghana, with both teams currently level on four points after two matches.
England made a statement in their opening game with a thrilling 4-2 victory over Croatia before being frustrated in a goalless draw against Ghana earlier this week. The mixed performances have raised questions over England's credentials as genuine title contenders despite their qualification.
Tuchel expects another difficult challenge against a Panama side that is yet to earn a point but has impressed defensively throughout the tournament.
"It's a team that is difficult to break down, they've hardly allowed any chances," Tuchel said ahead of Saturday's match.
"We see a well-coached, well-drilled team and a clear identity. It's not the most famous football nation, but they can play the role of underdog and play without any pressure."
Despite criticism over England's inconsistent displays, Tuchel remains confident his squad can compete with the tournament's strongest teams.
"I'm not scared," the England manager said. "I would just play football and we feel confident enough to be ready and compete on any level. We focus on what we can influence."
Failure to beat Panama would likely intensify scrutiny of England, particularly after impressive performances from other favourites including France and Argentina during the group stage.
