Juan Soto Signs Record-Breaking Deal with the New York Mets
Dominican star Juan Soto has signed a historic contract with the New York Mets worth $765 million over 15 years, making it the largest deal in sports history, according to reports from U.S. media on Sunday.
Soto's contract surpasses the $700 million, 10-year deal signed last year by Japanese player Shohei Ohtani with the Los Angeles Dodgers, a record-setting agreement that established a new benchmark for sports salaries.
The New Face of the Mets
Soto, who played last season with the New York Yankees, will now be the leading figure for the Mets, the other team from the Big Apple. According to ESPN, his contract does not include deferred payments like Ohtani's and features clauses that could push its total value beyond $800 million. Additionally, it includes an opt-out option after five years.
The Yankees made every effort to retain the most sought-after free agent in Major League Baseball. According to MLB.com, they offered $760 million over 16 years but ultimately fell short against the Mets' bid.
Last season, Soto played in the World Series with the Yankees, where they lost to Ohtani's Dodgers. Now, he will join a Mets team that also features Puerto Rican star Francisco Lindor and fell short last season in the National League Championship Series against the Dodgers.
This move is set to reshape the landscape for the upcoming MLB season.
