Los Angeles Dodgers Advance to the World Series to Face the New York Yankees
The Los Angeles Dodgers secured their spot in the World Series, where they will face the Yankees, by defeating the New York Mets 10-5 this Sunday. The Dodgers and the Yankees will meet for the twelfth time in the Fall Classic starting this Friday. Tommy Edman hit a home run and drove in four runs in the game that also earned them the championship of the National League.
The Mets took the lead in the first inning when Pete Alonso hit an infield single, and shortstop Tommy Edman made a throwing error to first base. Puerto Rican Francisco Lindor took advantage of the mistake and advanced to home plate.
The Dodgers responded in the bottom of the first inning. Edman hit a double to left field against starter Sean Manaea, bringing Japanese player Shohei Ohtani and Dominican Teoscar Hernández home. Edman punished Manaea again in the third inning when Hernández sent the ball over the fence.
In that third inning, Will Smith connected a hit off one of the pitches from reliever Phil Maton, driving Max Muncy home. Thus, the home team added two more runs. The Mets scored two runs in the fourth inning. Venezuelan Francisco Álvarez was on base when Dominican Mark Vientos hit his fifth home run of the postseason, setting a new team record with 14 RBIs in the playoffs.
In the sixth inning, Ohtani, facing reliever Ryne Stanek, hit a single that brought Smith in for the seventh run. The Mets responded in the seventh inning when Venezuelan Francisco Álvarez hit a fly ball to right field, allowing Tyrone Taylor to advance home.
The Dodgers answered back in the eighth with a three-run rally, the first coming from a two-base hit by Mookie Betts to left field, scored by Michael Taylor. The other run in this inning came from a sacrifice fly by Hernández to right field, allowing Ohtani to score from third base. The third run was driven in by Puerto Rican Kike Hernández with a single that brought Edman home.
The Mets added another run in the ninth inning with a single by Jeff McNeil. The win went to Ben Casparius (1-0), who completed 1.1 scoreless innings, while the save went to Blake Treinen (2), who pitched two innings, allowing one run and striking out four. Manaea (2-1), who had dominated the Dodgers in the second game of this series, struggled against the Angels' bats and had to leave the mound after two innings in which five runs scored, ultimately taking the loss.
